Jeff Iorio

Seven years ago, I left behind a life built in the New York metro area and headed south. The decision was not made lightly. I’d grown up in Westchester county, spent eight years in Brooklyn, then 12 in Maplewood, NJ. I was a dyed-in-the-wool Yankee.

The allure of North Carolina began when my son played in a tournament at the Team USA Baseball complex in Cary. It didn’t take long to see the merits of a southern lifestyle; the cost of living was manageable, the pace wasn’t breakneck, and the weather, well, let’s just say the days of shoveling the car out of a foot of snow weren’t something I’d get nostalgic over.

So we made the leap. My wife, Nicole, got the green light to work remotely. My sons, then 14 and 12, declared they were up for the adventure. We listed our house, and dedicated all our spare time to scoping out homes in neighborhoods around North Carolina’s Triangle—Raleigh, Durham and Chapel Hill.

The process didn’t move in a straight line, by any means. There were places we became enamored with, only to abruptly change course after a happenstance conversation would sour us on a particular town. And—who knows why? As a general rule, I’m not the type of person to take life advice from a random person in a random restaurant in a random town. Yet when one has nothing to latch onto, any feedback is better than none.

I’ve lived in some far-flung places—Kyoto, Anchorage and Guatemala City to name a few—yet this was our first move as a family. In my 20s, I felt like I could hack it anywhere. Once kids enter the equation, however, such decisions carry a much greater weight.

We were fortunate to have an excellent realtor as our concierge to the South. He had a comprehensive knowledge of neighborhoods, plus a rolodex of school district contacts, builders and contractors. When I look back on the period when we were truly adrift in terms of understanding which towns might work best for us, I’m grateful that we had a seasoned tour guide.

I aim to be that bridge for you.
